Hot Air Extractor upgrade update

Yesterday we spent all day assembling ducting fittings, measuring the actual ducting runs, and installing the 3 new fans into the rear wall of the building.

The 3 new fans are in their spigot boxes ready to receive the ducting which will happen next week.  Intial testing reveals potential extraction of 5-6 times the present amount, more than the 4-5 times predicted.

Upgrade to Hot Air Extraction – 7th to 15th July

We are planning an upgrade to the Hot Air Extraction system at the Sheffield Data Centre between the 7th and 15th of July.  The upgraded extraction will be able to extract more hot air from each of the contained hot aisles within the Sheffield Data Centre.

This work will benefit all customers, and no downtime is being announced during the works.

The work will involve replacing the ducting taking away hot air from the hot aisles, and replacing it with much larger ducting and extractor fans in the rear wall of the building.  We will of course take photos of the work as it progresses over the 8 days planned.

When complete the new extraction will be able to remove 13,500 cubic meters of hot air per hour, more than 3 times the current system.

Some management tasks may be accomplished off-site due to reduced office space during the works.

Cooling upgrade next week @ Sheffield Data Centre

We’re installing new cooling ducting next week in the Sheffield Data Centre.

The new ducts will tap into our existing Evaporative Cooling system and feed directly into the computer room to a low level, providing more cleaned, cool air to the racks.  The new ducts are to suppliment the existing air intakes.

The cooling system will remain switched on throughout the installation, no servers will need to be shut down beforehand.

Engineers will be on site monitoring all systems during the install.

We’ve penciled in Monday 13th June for the work.

UPDATE:

We got this work completed Wednesday 15th June, and we’ve already had positive feedback from a customer who tells us their servers are already cooler by as much as 10 degrees!  If anyone else out there has an update to server temperature, let us know!

Gaming Switch firmware upgrade – partial success

We’ve marked CH2011-04_08 to upgrade the firmware and management of the gaming network switch as a partial success.

Issues with the TFTP download from Netgear prevented us from successfully applying the updated firmware, and issues with the second gaming VLAN on the same switch prevented us from migrating ports.  We will attempt this again at a later time.

We did however successfully move the management VLAN to our new Active Directory network and update the MRTG monitoring scripts to not go through the application firewalls.

A “post-mortem” of why we couldn’t apply the firmware and 2nd VLAN will be done next week.

All services communicated out as impacted to affected customers should now be back to normal.

SharePoint back online – change backed-out

17/06/2010 04:30 – SharePoint is now back online.  Due to issues moving the master config databases to a different SQL installation, plus issues installing a SharePoint rollup patch we have decided to roll-back all changes made by un-doing the VMware snapshot.  No data was damaged and SharePoint is back as it was before the change started.  We’ll review the data we collected and re-attempt the upgrade soon.

Client Control Panel upgrades completed!

The scheduled work to upgrade our Client Control Panel this weekend was completed successfully.  We’ve upgraded from WHMCS 3.7.2 to 4.2.1, and made improvements to the overnight Scheduled Tasks, the invoice and email layouts, as well as integrating the control panel into the “look and feel” of the rest of the HA websites.

The Client Control Panel is now accessible via the new link of https://clientaccess.hahosting.com/ccp/

The previous links (ccp.hahosting.com & secure.hahosting.com/ha/ccp/) will still work but redirect you to the new link.

No more “visible” work on the Client Control Panel will happen now for a few weeks while we gather feedback and fully use/abuse/featuretest the new platform.

The next job on the clientaccess platform is the go-live of the Hyper-V Web Access control panel, powered by WebsitePanel, currently undergoing final testing.  Watch this space!
